The Origins of Valentine’s Day

The origins of Valentine’s Day trace back to ancient Rome, where the day was initially linked to a festival known as Lupercalia, celebrated around mid-February. Lupercalia was a pagan festival dedicated to fertility and purification, where rituals were performed to ward off evil spirits and promote fertility in both humans and animals. During the festival, young men and women were paired together in a kind of lottery, symbolizing the fertility and renewal of life.

The connection to romantic love began to emerge when the day was later associated with Saint Valentine, a Christian martyr. While there were several saints named Valentine, the most widely accepted legend centers around Saint Valentine of Rome, a priest who lived during the reign of Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century CE.

According to one popular account, Emperor Claudius had banned marriages for young soldiers, believing that unmarried men made better warriors. Valentine, however, secretly performed marriages for young couples in defiance of the emperor's decree. When Valentine was eventually caught and sentenced to death, he was executed on February 14th, around the year 269 CE.
